CSUMB McNair Scholars Program

CSUMB McNair Scholars Program

The CSUMB McNair Scholars Program is embedded within the UROC Scholars program and prepares academically-talented and motivated CSUMB undergraduates from all majors for doctoral level studies via engagement in research and other scholarly activities that support the successful transition to graduate programs.

The McNair Scholars Program is supported by the Department of Education and established in memory of Dr. Ronald E. McNair, a physicist and NASA astronaut who served on the Challenger space shuttle.

The McNair Program is for students who:

  • Enjoy being part of a student cohort striving for graduate degrees.
  • Strive for intensive research experiences.
  • Dedicate themselves to scholarship, leadership, and high-achievement.
  • Commit to pursuing a Ph.D. in a research-focused graduate program.

Learn more about the McNair experience in the Stories of Dos Mujeres McNair at CSUMB podcast.

Books Selected by McNair Scholars, Alumni, Faculty, and Staff

Roots of Resistance

"Reading Roots of Resistance made me realize how little I know about my own heritage and the history that brought my family to the United States. It raised questions I had never fully considered—what were the conditions my grandparents and their ancestors lived through? What forces pushed them to leave their homeland? The book explores the intersections of race, gender, and labor, shedding light on how men and women were assigned specific roles. These roles often came with limitations, exploitation, and manipulation—conditions that, over time, became normalized and even passed down as strategies for survival."

-Yefry Samael Mata Diaz, CSUMB Ronald E. McNair Scholar, Class of 2026

The Latinx Guide to Graduate School

"I wish I had a book to read that was written by Latine academics for Latine students when I was an undergraduate student. It would have helped me better process and map out what my graduate schools options and next steps were at that time."

-Kenny Garcia, CSUMB Librarian, SUNY-Binghamton Ronald E. McNair Scholar, Class of 2001
